CHANDRAGHANTA DEVI

Seeing Parvati’s beauty, the demon-king Mahishasur wanted Her to be his wife. She agreed, but only if he proved to be stronger than She was. Although he had a boon to not be killed by any man, he underestimated the power of God’s creative Shakti and was killed by Her in the form of Chandraghanta Devi. Mahishasur represents the great ego in man, especially the pride to think ourselves better than others. We pray to Her for the humility needed to free us from any kind of pride. Her colour is orange.

DID YOU KNOW?

The spring and fall are seasons of transition; they are ideal times to restore balance, both physically and spiritually. Ancient yogis chose this time to focus on their sadhana and to fast in order to cleanse the physical body in preparation for the food changes of the new season. Navaratri is a time when we do both in the company of sangha, our spiritual community. Fall Navaratri is connected to Devi, the feminine aspect of the Divine. This festival concludes with Dussehra, the victory day when Durga Maa’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura is celebrated.

Navaratri is a 9-night festival celebrating Goddess Durga’s victories over the demons that represent the negative qualities that keep us from realising our true, eternal self. The Divine Mother, in the form of Durga Maa, is the Remover of Miseries. She appears in 9 different forms, each an embodiment of the qualities that one needs to advance on the spiritual path.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Each night we worship a different aspect of the Divine Mother with special prayers, pujas, and bhajans. After the yajna (holy fire ceremony) and abhishekam, Devi will be dressed and offered an abundance of prasad. The story of Her victories over numerous demons, the triumph of good over evil and the elevation of Divine Love over the ego will be read each evening from the Devi Mahatmyam.
