LORD OF LOVE

Janmashtami marks the birth of Sri Krishna, who in the bhakti tradition is loved as the embodiment of prem (unconditional love) and ananda (bliss).

The celebration builds through the evening — devotional singing, dancing, and traditional rituals — toward midnight, the hour of Krishna’s birth.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the story of the Rasa Lila (the divine play), the gopis’ love for Krishna was so complete that he is said to have multiplied himself so each could feel he was hers alone.

Their love is described in the tradition as the purest form of devotion — a relationship of pure love, held up as an example for anyone on the path.

This is the heart of what Janmashtami celebrates: not only Krishna’s birth, but the love between the Divine and those who long for it.

True love is unconditional. On Janmashtami, we celebrate not only the birth of Krishna but the birth of boundless love within ourselves.

What Makes This Night Special?

Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the Hindu calendar. The evening moves from the busyness of the day into something quieter and more focused — a night of music, ritual, and devotion held in community.

Kirtan through the night

The celebration is carried by kirtan — devotional singing in call and response. People describe the music as the thing that lets the mind settle and the hours fall away.

Traditional rituals

The night includes traditional rituals drawn from the five elements, performed in the lead-up to the midnight celebration of Krishna’s birth.

Prasad

The evening includes prasad — food offered in devotion and then shared. In the Hindu tradition, sharing prasad is one of the oldest and simplest acts of community, carried out for thousands of years.
